Joseph Conrad’s Daily Writing Output

  1. If it gets you, as a writer, to Heart of Darkness, what the heck—take as long as you need! Harlan Ellison, I read, used to brag how he could bang out an excellent short story (beyond draft one or two) in under an hour.
And now I don’t feel so bad that I’m dithering over a 50-something word piece. (In fact, I’ve probably written the darn thing about 40 different ways and I’m no longer impartial to, surprised or impressed by most of them.)

    • Yes! I also think that the word ‘daily’ is key: when there is persistent, cumulative effort the work soon begins to add up to something 🙂
