Lack of funding forces organisation to dissolve, over 60 years after its establishment. Source: Harriet: The Blog.

  1. Well, pooh. Hard to like this post! Say what you will, Eliot’s issues (critics’ allegations of anti-Semitism, etc.) notwithstanding, he and his organization did encourage poetry and excellence in writing, and I’m sad to see it go in this fashion.

    • I think that just about sums up my position too, Leigh. I have always felt ambivalent towards Eliot, but respect his literary achievements and much of what he did to support literature and the arts.

      • Thanks, Rhys. I used to be more gung-ho about Eliot, mainly in grad school, but that has dimmed somewhat over time. Despite the literary lion status, he had some (serious) foibles as a human being [as most of us do] and otherwise.
